Inking Her Name in The Name Tattoo Industry: Interview with Jessica Talbot at Scarlet Rose Tattoo Parlor

A well-decorated artist on the Rhode Island tattoo scene, Jessica Talbot is changing the way that Rhode Islanders think about their tattoo experience. Jess’ passion for the timeless art of American traditional tattooing, combined with her belief in “the power of storytelling through tattoos,” turns each client’s vision into a lasting work of art. As she puts it, “I’ve always had a feeling, since I was a teenager, that this was my destiny. I always had a weird calling to it.” Following this intuitive urge, Jess began honing her craft as a tattoo artist in 2020, just before the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfettered by the obstacles that quarantine dumped in her path, Jess went on to complete her tattooing license by 2022 and recently opened her own shop, Scarlet Rose Tattoo Parlor.

MASTER OF MANY TRADES

Jess’ primary style is American Traditional, a technique filled with nautical themes that have become quintessential to RI and its many generations of ocean enthusiasts. The style is characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and classic designs such as the anchor, symbolizing stability and grounding, the lighthouse, which represents guidance and hope, and the mermaid, embodying the mystery and allure of femininity. Aiming to bring a modern twist to traditional motifs, Jess’ portfolio also ventures beyond American traditional, incorporating a black-and-grey, fineline style that has produced many delicate roses and soft butterflies for her clients.

A PARLOUR OF THE PEOPLE

Opening the doors to her very first shop in Warwick this past February, Jess recently took on the mission of providing a safe and welcoming environment where clients can bring their tattoo ideas to life. Scarlet Rose Tattoo Parlor, located at 1167 Main Ave, is the physical manifestation of Jess’ passion and vision for a more comfortable tattooing experience for both clients and artists alike. Adopting an approach that centers communication and flexibility, Jess is hopeful that her shop will attract customers and artists across the region looking for a reliable, professional, and collaborative experience. Jess plans to integrate with the community by hosting fundraisers and other events to build rapport with potential clients. Reflecting on her experiences on the receiving end of the needle, Jess values the relationship that she’s developed with her tattoo artist, Heath at The White Horse Tattoo. Over the years, the two have built a relationship that feels “comfortable and natural,” resulting in body art that feels equally snug on the skin.
