Extreme Heat Warning until June 24, 08:00 PM EDT

At Providence, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through Tue 8pm, with temperatures/heat indices reaching 93°F/103°F (Mon) and 98°F/104°F (Tue). Temperature/heat index will decline somewhat after the warning period, remaining oppressively but not dangerously hot, 84°F/87°F (Wed), then back to the comfortable range 78°F/78°F (Thu). Locations closer to the coast, south of the metropolitan area, may be slightly hotter.

A heat dome will make way for the extreme heat by clearing out most cloud cover and allowing unremitting sun to warm the ground. The next chance of rain will be Thu night.
Overnight lows will remain about 80°F, a more ominous indication of systemic climate change than the afternoon high temperatures expected on some days of summer, which began at 10:42pm EDT on Fri, Jun 20, with the solstice.
The heat index is an estimate of the “apparent temperature” based on the combined temperature in the shade as measured by an ordinary dry bulb thermometer and the relative humidity. Conditions in direct sunlight will usually be substantially hotter. The body loses the ability to regulate its temperature by evaporating sweat, possibly causing severe illness such as heat stroke, which is life-threatening, as heat index this high can cause death. If outside, curtail strenuous activity, stay hydrated, take breaks, and seek shade when possible. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles. Check on elderly and other vulnerable people, especially if they have no air conditioning.
