Athena’s talks philanthropy and sex education You can spot Athena’s Home Novelties in Woonsocket from a good distance – most days, their signature purple RV with a giant illustration of a winking woman is parked at the front of their lot. It’s a fitting emblem for the company in many ways. Bright purple, an attention-grabbing, […]
It’s kind of sad. Really, it is. I admit, before seeing the Gaslight Anthem at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, I had never, ever thought about crowd-surfing. You’ve seen it before – person taps a strong-looking fellow on the shoulder, gives him a thumbs up, and before you can blink, there he is, riding a sea of […]
What to do on an island during the autumn You see the signs ominously creeping in: the sun is setting noticeably earlier, back-to-school anxiety is forming a visible smog over New England, the birds are starting to pack up so they can leave town — along with the tourists. The end of summer is nigh! […]
Tis the season to explore the hidden gems of Southern New England trails and wild life refuges That crisp chill in the night air can only mean one thing: fall is on its way! Yes, there will be pie. But there will also be leaves! Of many colors! And manic last ditch attempts to get […]
Visiting, here for college, or starting a new job: Your “to do in RI” guide Whenever I tell an outsider I’m from Rhode Island, I witness either (1) a glazed-over look of confusion as they ask themselves, “Is that a state?” or (2) an enormous smile as they recall the state’s beauty and culture. Inevitably […]
When I first saw this young lady perform, I went to New Urban Arts (NUA) to see a fellow “Word!” family member perform for the youth at NUA. The Providence Poetry Youth Slam Team were opening, and this was my first time witnessing their brilliance because I missed them at AS220. The Gospel of Providence […]
In honor of Lovecraft’s birthday and this weekend’s Necronomicon, we thought we’d look at some of H.P.’ s monstrosities and turn the tables. The dinner tables, that is. While traditionally his ancient beings eat us helpless mortals, these images show that we can also consume them. Thanks to Dori Blacker, who actually created the cake […]
The Fifteenth Annual Newport Storm Luau drops on Fort Adams this weekend. RI’s first microbrewery has been throwing this shindig for as long as I can remember, but that’s not saying much with my memory. Not only is this yet another beer event to benefit a good cause, the Fort Adams Trust itself, but it’s […]
So what happens at a NecronomiCon? The weekend of August 22-25 looks to be chock full of events related to HP Lovecraft – some more tangentially than others – with some items aimed at the hard-core fan, and others at the casually curious. Let’s start with the name. It has nothing to do with necrophilia. […]
PROFILE LOCALE The White Horse Tavern, located at 26 Marlborough St in Newport, is without exaggeration, as far away from being a “new restaurant” as it gets. Founded in 1673, Newport’s White Horse is the oldest bar in America. It was briefly owned and operated by a pirate, served a stint as a town inn where […]
