To the Editor : Teachers should not be armed with guns. One, teachers don’t have the experience to handle a gun. They need to have knowledge on guns before getting one. The schools have a hard enough time paying for a police officer to stay at the school. Who would pay for the gun in […]
To the Editor, On Sunday, March 18, the business section of The Providence Journal printed an AP article, “Bids to curb health-care costs falter.” The article goes on about the machinations in Congress about fixing or destroying the Affordable Care Act, but the article misses the real point. No one in Congress wants the price […]
“No More,” “This is what democracy looks like” and “Enough is enough;” those were the chants heard at the student-run march to end gun violence at the RI State House on March 14. At 12:45pm students from high schools all over the state walked or drove to the state house in quite a tear-jerking sight as […]
On March 14, students throughout this country exercised their first amendment rights and walked out to bring awareness to the gun problem in our country. As an educator, I firmly believe students need to be in the classroom at all times. In fact I pride myself on not calling the office for student interruptions because I don’t […]
The Value of Porn What’s your porn worth? It’s a question RI Senators Frank Ciccone (D-Providence) and Hanna Gallo (D-Cranston) have been asking themselves, on behalf of Rhode Islanders. The Good News A few articles in the Friday, March 9, New York Times gave Phillipe & Jorge reason to believe that the patriarchal culture in a number of countries may be crumbling. International Women’s Day (March 8) gave rise to feminist groups in Spain urging women to spend no money on that day and and also […]
I am an outlier in the debate about guns. I’m a Northeasterner, and most of my friends are very unfamiliar with guns. There are exceptions, but on social media the most common view I see expressed is to wonder why anyone would want a gun, to wonder why they are legal for civilians to own […]
A Fine Kettle of Fish It’s probably a good thing that Nicholas Kettle, the 27-year-old Republican state senator, has resigned from the RI Senate and the whole sordid mess he’s embroiled in will be heard in court. Accusations of twice extorting sex from a teenaged state house page and sharing nude photographs of his ex-girlfriend […]
Never Again is the name of the current populist movement to address school shootings. Their focus is on banning the sale of semi-automatic weapons to the public, although better ways of addressing mental illness and school safety are also included. This is not our first school shooting – nor our 20th — in recent years. What’s […]
